Legends win title as DeC Rebels suffer defeat (Week 15)

The Legends have secured the AECL League title after a crushing victory over Chevron at Allan Park Stadium, however the much talked about margin had no bearing on the final outcome as the DeC Rebels suffered defeat at the hands of a strong Aberdeen University side at Kings College.

There were also wins for ATSSC, Knightriders, Dare Devils, Caledonian and St Ronald. ATSSC have secured third place in the league, with the Knightriders in fourth place in their first season in the AECL. It is Grammar 98 that find themselves at the wrong end of the table this year.

The Rebels turned out at Kings College knowing that a comprehensive victory would ensure a title win, however they would have to face the Uni side without Batsman of the Year, Kapil, forced to sit out through injury. Aberdeen University won the toss and posted a respectable total of 133 for 5 off 20 overs. Top scorers for the Uni side were Fraunstein (30no), Mohsin (30no) and Jacque (23). In reply, the Rebels lost wickets at regular intervals and slumped to 115 AO in the fading light. Vikram (20), Debo (15), Shree(24) and Naru (24) are played their part. As it turned out, given the huge margin of victory for the Legends at Allan Park, only a nine wicket victory would have secured the title for the Rebels on the night. So for the second year on the trot, the DeC Rebels find themselves runners up in the league by the narrowest of margins.

Heavy rain during the day had caused local spinster at number 33, Miss Deboat, to take in her washing. She had finally managed to empty her holiday case and do the laundry but was nervous about leaving her purple and yellow Corona thong on display. She need not have worried though, the skies cleared and as she surveyed the arriving Legends, Boycott was nowhere to be seen.....her thong was safe. It was the final match of a debut season for the Legends and opponents Chevron, led by the big hitting Tim Donald, were a threat. The Legends were trailing the Rebels by a margin of 78 and knew that nothing but a comprehensive win was likely to give them any chance of the league title. Miss Deboat shivered, not at the chill in the air but in anticipation of an exciting end to her evening.

Skipper Balsillie for once did not lose the toss, mainly because the very poor tosser was injured and could not participate in proceedings. Gilly wandered out to the middle and astonished the world by proving what a great tosser he was and deciding, unusually, to bat (a vital toss to win for the Legends). Opening up with Grayson and Hadden, the Legends made a steady start until Hadden sent back Grayson who's turning circle resembled an Australian road train for a simple run out. Hadden was infuriated by this and took out his ire on the Chevron bowling finishing up with a 4-6-6 on his way to an unbeaten 30. This set the tone for the Legends innings as the poor Chevron bowlers had no answer to the brutal assault on their attack. Milroy (30 with big hitting), Keith (35, mostly edges), S Milne (31 who ran really well – not, but huge hitting), Thompson (30 - who storm trooped slowly) and Forbes (31 who amazed everyone) all sent the ball into orbit, losing four balls in the process, one of which lodged in the starboard wing vent of the Mir space station scaring the living out of the cosmonauts inside who happened to have a cheeky wee telescope focused on number 33's bedroom window at the time. A huge score was on the cards and this was reinforced as Gillys first ball was dispatched for a flat 6 which almost decapitated the watching AECL President/Secretary. The legends were in danger of running out of men before the allotted 20 overs were completed but with Anderson and Sutherland to come, Forbes retired and Anderson faced the final ball of the innings much to Suds’ relief. A massive total of 236 for 4 off 20 overs.

The Chevron innings began with Donald and Skedge at the crease and following a slow start, thanks to some tight bowling from Thompson and Forbes, were soon hitting out. Skedge was unlucky to be run out thanks to a quite unbelievable bit of fielding from Keith who went full length to stop a drive and returned for Grayson to whip off the bails. This brought Frost to the crease who got a predictably chilly reception. The Chevron total climbed and when Donald was dropped by Gilly, who failed miserably to hold onto yet another catch, worry set in. Faith however was restored when Milroy held onto one and sent Donald (22) home. When Frost (18) was adjudged LBW, the writing was on the wall for Chevron and the resistance crumbled as Anderson (4 for 8) and Hadden (3 for 14) went to work, but not before Z and Forbes had tried to emulate Keith with spectacular run outs by zinging the ball in at a million miles an hour only to forget that Hadden did not have gloves on. This left Hadden in a far grumpier mood than his usual grumpy mood as he surveyed his demolished fingers. It was left for the Special one (2 for 1) to mop up the final two wickets as Chevron finished on 71 all out. A nervous wait then ensued until word from the University filtered through that the Rebels had lost, leaving the Legends as AECL Champions. Both teams retired to the Bieldside Inn where the league trophy was presented to Skipper Balsillie. Beer was flowing and Gilly was last seen hanging on to a bottle of Corona and heading for the exit. At number 33, Miss Deboat left the latch off the conservatory door, she stretched luxuriously on the couch, her housecoat loosely fastened over her tanned voluptuous frame. The Mir telescope focused on a shadowy figure, clutching a bottle and flower, making his way up the garden at number 33. Fumbling with the conservatory door, the bottle fell from his grasp, Miss Deboat jumped from the couch in fright, her housecoat flailing open................................................ "another one dropped" commented the cosmonaut (in Russian)..............................................................

The Dare Devils rounded off a successful debut in the AECL with a 69 run victory over Grammar 98. The Dare Devils batted first and posted a huge total of 191 for 3 off 20 overs, with Prem (33no), Arul (30no), Jason (30no), Chetan (21no) and Sri (16no) are contributing with the bat.  In reply, Grammar 98 reached 122 for 5 off 20 overs, with J. Garner (27), M. Lloyd (25no) and L. Goval (17) top scoring. Pick of the bowlers for the Dare Devils was Sri (2 for 16).

The Knightriders won the toss and elected to bat against Ellon at the Shed. The Knightriders posted a total of 132 for 9 off 20 overs, with Siva (35no), Suman (24), Venu (17no) and Mohan (14) top scoring. In reply, Ellon fell agonisingly short by only 3 runs in a very close match, reaching 129 for 9 after 20 overs, with J. Barratt (33 no) and Chris (31) top scoring for Ellon. Pick of the bowlers for the Riders were Prashu (3 for 26 off 4 overs), Raja (1 for 20 off 4 overs) and Ravi (1 for 21 off 3 overs).

Inn at the Park posted a total of 118 for 6 for Caledonian to chase in what turned out to be another very close match in the AECL. Top scorers for the Park were Mush (33no), Amit (29) and Anubhav (30no). In reply, Caledonian required 4 runs off the last over with 3 wickets remaining. With 2 balls remaining, 2 runs were still required. However there was to be no doubt, as the penultimate ball went for 6 to ensure another win for Caledonian and sixth place in the league, their best performance for a number of years.

In their final match of the season, St Ronald recorded a 36 run victory over the Gentlemen Players of Rubislaw. Batting first, St Ronald posted a total of 153 for 4 off 20 overs. In reply, the GPoR reached 117 for 8 after 20 overs.

ATSSC recorded a 8 wicket victory over MCC in their last match of the season to secure third place in the league. MCC batted first and posted a total of 108 for 8. In reply, ATSSC reached 109 for 2, with Gopinathan and Veldsman both retiring on 30.
