Rockhoppers Match Report:

Shell Scrape Through Rockhopper's Defence....

12th June 2018

Our third outing this season saw us face Shell, last year's runner's up and winners in multiple previous years. Shell was always going to be a tough nut to crack, and so it proved on this occasion.

After predictably winning the toss, Shell elected to bat first.

Our first wicket was a catch by Scott Middleton off Aman Sood in the 5th over, with their opening batsman falling for 12. But we waited a long time to celebrate again, with their second opener and number 3 both retiring on 32 apiece.

Rene van Oorchsot clean bowled their skipper (and his own squash partner) Aqeel for 1, whilst Jon Barret caught and bowled their number 5 for 2. With wickets falling all around, we dared to think we may have a chance, but Shell broke our concentration with their number six taking his own stumps out with what would have been a fine cut had he been just a couple of feet further forward.

Our loss of concentration at this hilarity put us off and their next two batsmen went for 21 (stumped off Matt Sandham) and 31 (retired).

Keeper Hozefa achieved a second stumping off Skipper Garry O'Neill, but ultimately the damage was done and Shell played out their 20 overs for 164.

Bowling averages; Aman Sood 1 for 24 off 4, Felix Middleton 0 for 19 off 2, Rene van Oorschot 1 for 20 off 4, Matt Sandham (Debut) 1 for 28 off 3, and finally Skipper Garry O'Neill 2 for 28 off 3.

Shell finished their innings on 164 for 5 (and 3 retired).

Our batting performance certainly left something to be desired.

Shell made their attack with no less than seven bowlers, and only one of our side, Aman Sood, made it to double figures, being caught on 13,

and only two others making it past 5, namely Scott Middleton, caught on 8 after a whopping six on his third ball, and John Morgan on 8, dismissed by pulling the ball onto his own wicket on his seventh ball.

We could have expected more from William Middleton, who was stoically holding the crease for 14 balls and scored 4 (boundary) before being

run out through no fault of his own by a ludicrous decision by Morgan to run when the ball was already in the wicket keeper's gloves.

Morgan is booked into the optician before our next game! Skipper Garry O'Neill played for his average and finished on 0(n.o.) and Rockhoppers finished on 58 all out.

Once again our batting performance has been our downfall. More nets required. But as I told my wife (as she wept tears of laughter on learning the score), we are demonstrably getting better. We were only beaten by 106 runs this week!
