Shell CC lift the Oxy Cup for the first time..... beating The Dons in an entertaining final that went down to the last over

The Dons lined up against Shell CC on a beautiful evening at Mannofield to contest the 2018 Oxy Cup Final.

Dons winning the toss and electing to bat on a batsmen heaven prepared by Ken. Openers Alex Keith & Akhlaq Bashir got their innings off to a quick start, until the 3rd over when Akhlaq miss timing a drive providing cover with a low catch.

That brought Rob Sweirgnon to the crease, both Grammer colleagues rotated the strike well, and with some lusty blows, both retired ...

In came Karan Anand & Abid Ali, both went about playing their shots, Karan was first to fall, a short ball from Indi hit straight to Ibtihaj at short fine leg! Abid was quick to follow, with a leading edge to mid off, well held by Skipper Aqeel.

In rolled 'boom boom' Taj Singh, and like 'boom boom', his innings was over in a flash as he skied one to Aryan at deep mid on, well judged and held by the youngster.

Prashant, reliable as ever played a sensible innings, retiring for 31, the Dons innings came to an abrupt end with a total of 153, Atif Shehman taking 2 wickets in an over to finish with figures of 4 for 33. Anjum Toor 1 for 29, Indi 1 for 25.

Shell CC set 154 to win, their innings got off to the worst possible start, Indi lofting straight into the hands of Mid On Rana. This brought 'Mr Reliable' Farooq Durrani to the crease to join the youngster Aryan.

Both taking their time to slowly build tthe innings, Aryan falling for 21, and Farooq being run out for 26. Sadiq & Abrar at the crease saw the run rate lift for a brief period until Abrar was caught at point going for a miss timed drive.

Sadiq then took the attack to the Dons bowlers, with the 2 shots of the day and the only sixes too. First hitting Tarun for a clean drive over Mid On's head, and the very next ball disappearing over the square leg boundary.

Sadiq retired on 31 dispatching a leg side flick for 4 runs, great piece of batting when his team needed it.

Shell CC's score sitting at 102 for 6, Usman Khan & Anjum Toor at the crease batted sensibly running two's and hitting the bad balls for boundaries. Usman going for a big heave, ended up being caught at point.

Atif Shehman joined Anjum at the crease, both these batsmen were Shell's last hope, with the score on 123 for 7 off 16th over. The guys played an absolute blinder, took their runs when offered, putting bad balls away,

leaving the equation of 18 off 12 balls. Dons were forced to bring Prashanth into the attack, who conceded 16 off his over, not to mention some charitable fielding by the Dons and some, it has to be said, poor catching.

Leaving Atif to hit 2 runs from the second ball of the last over to get Shell CC over the line ..... finally, finally, Shell win the Oxy Cup for the first time in their history.

A special thanks to Ken & Kieren from Mannofield for allowing us to play at the ground and making it a special occasion for both teams and the AECL.

Commiseration to The Dons, who maybe should have won it had they taken their catches, but, I am sure they will be back next year stronger. And well done to Shell CC for finally getting through, and lifting the Oxy Cup.
