Crescent let it slip against Bons in the Oxy Cup Semi-Final

Crescent met Bons on a humid night at the Links .... which surprised everyone including the umpire who had brought a woolly hat & gloves for the occasion!

Bons Captain Adnan called correct and elected to bat on what can only be described as a rough piece of grass. Bons opened with Fazal Awan & Shakeel Ahmed, Awan was dispatched back to the hut without troubling the scorer, Shakeel too was sent packing, both openers top edging looping catches to gully from the bowling of V Khanna. In came Karan Anand who had 2 ducks to his name from previous games at the Links, he graciously added a 3rd duck. In came Danyal, out went Danyal, it was like a revolving door of Bons batsmen. The score sat at 2 runs for 4 wickets from 2 overs!

Akhlaq who had been watching from the non-strikers end must have been cursing his Captian for choosing to bat first. Instead, he set about building his innings, with some quick running between the wickets and some timed boundaries, eventually retiring on 33, finishing with a 4 between mid-on and mid-off, well played under some immense pressure from the Crescent bowling attack. Skipper Adnan added 19 to get Bons to a respectable 111 for 8.

Crescent started cautiously knowing they needed less than a run a ball to reach the total. Madhan & Alex were going well until Madhan holed out to short mid-on (F. Awan) for a simple catch. Alex replayed a copy cat shot to the same fielder off the bowling of Mujeeb Khan. The next 3 Crescent batsmen played exactly the same shot and were caught by the same fielder (F. Awan) who took an amazing 5 catches at the same fielding position. V. Khanna was the only batsmen to put up any form of resistance with a vigil 26 Not Out, only to fall astonishingly short as the tail collapsed, leaving Crescent all out on 98!

Crescent will look back it this match as an opportunity missed with dropped catches in the field having sent the top 4 batsmen back without troubling the scorer. And with bat, Crescent kept losing wickets to silly shots at regular intervals, leaving V. Khanna too much to do in the last 5 overs to get over the line.

Credit has to go to Bons, for laboring on even though they lost top batsmen early, and then kept a lid on the scoring with tight bowling and good fielding to restrict Crescent.

Once again, a very entertaining game played in good spirit. Shell CC await Bons on Wednesday 10th July @ Mannofield. To bring the curtain down on the highlight of the Evening League season. See you all on Wednesday for what looks to be a highly anticipated clash.
